A time to celebrate our history!
Today we are celebrating a milestone; we are 125 years old!!
With birthdays always comes cake, so we have given our dogs a very special doggie cake to help get them involved with the celebrations. Please watch our video and join the celebrations of our history and share to help these dogs find happier tomorrows…
We are thrilled to announce that we have been rescuing stray and abandoned dogs in Birmingham, West Midlands and South Staffordshire for 125 years. It is a time to sit back and think of all the hard work that people have put in throughout the years.
It all started back in 1892, when a local philanthropist, Sir Alfred Gooch Bart, donated land in which the original site stood – New Canal Street. This is where it all began under the name ‘Birmingham Home for Lost and Starving Dogs.’
Almost a century at our New Canal Street site which saw thousands of stray dogs find happier tomorrows; it was time to move and help improve the welfare for all dogs that needed our help. In 1987, we moved just around the corner to New Bartholomew Street which saw BDH’s fortunes improve as well as the unwanted dogs that crossed its path.
It was then time to expand our charity to help more communities around the Staffordshire area and dogs that needed our support. In 2002, Sunnyside became part of BDH allowing us to cover a larger area and house an extra 90 dogs that desperately needed our help. Since opening, Sunnyside has thrived from the support of the local community and businesses and benefited from a kennel refurb in 2014 thanks to Support Adoption for Pets. This refurb has helped bring the centre up the highest standards of welfare for the thousands of dogs that need our help every year.
The year 2015 was the start of a new era for BDH. We had finally been able to build a new state-of-the-art rehoming centre which helps provide first class facilities for our dogs including underfloor heating in the kennels, isolation and whelping unit, enrichment areas, veterinary suite and an education and community centre to name a few.
Both centres provide the best care for the thousands of stray dogs that come into us every year, all thanks to our generous supporters. We wouldn’t be here without you so we would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated to us; your support means the world to our stray dogs. We also can’t forget the dedicated team who helped set this charity up all those years ago, some of whose families are still involved with BDH to this day. To those who have made us the charity that we are today, to Rescue, Reunite and Rehome all the stray and abandoned dogs that come into us, Thank you.
Also a big thank you to everyone who has rehomed a BDH dog – we hope they have given you many years of happiness. It is a pleasure to be a part of a journey in their life too. Please share your photos of the dogs you have rehomed from us over the years.
We will continue to care for all unwanted and abandoned dogs that need our help for many many years to come.
A big thank you from everyone at Birmingham Dogs Home for all your support.
